Skill Focus: Creativity and Innovation
The rapid progression of technology has transformed the workforce and opened a completely new world. The ability to operate with nothing more than a laptop and a mobile phone has rendered it an exciting time to be a creative and innovative thinker.
A recent report from Foundation for Young Australians found there has been a 65 per cent increase in the demand for creativity in job candidates. There are various roles, across a range of different sectors, that require innovative individuals.
Advertising
Advertising has long been affiliated with innovation, which is hardly surprising given that agencies contain dedicated creative departments. The digitalisation of the workforce has meant that advertisers are constantly trialling new methods to influence customers, adopting social media as a prime platform to target younger demographics.
Architecture
Buildings have always been unique, from the Great Pyramid of Giza to the Sydney Opera House. Architects are responsible for designing these structures and in an era of constant urbanisation, creativity is key. The discovery and repurposing of materials is fundamental to revolutionising construction, with resources like synthetic spider thread and bioplastic predicted to be gamechangers in the building scene.
Education
There has never been a time where parents have been as well informed about their child’s educational opportunities. Competition can be fierce, particularly between powerhouse private schools, and the means of promoting an institution’s worth has expanded to 360 degree visual tours, apps for smartphones and robust teaching methodologies.
Environmental Science
The conversation around climate change and global warming has led to a proliferation of jobs in the field of environmental science. Companies are far more conscious of sustainable practices and many initiate ‘green’ programs, which may include initiatives such as rainwater recycling and solar-thermal cladding, not only to reduce their carbon footprint but to appeal to clients and customers.
Real estate
Significant foreign investment into the Australian real estate market has flooded the nation’s capital cities with high rise apartments. This has fuelled strong competition in the property sector as businesses battle to attract wealthy overseas investors with innovative approaches to marketing and selling products. New features, like bird’s eye photos of developments and unique listing descriptions, are all designed to draw in buyers.
