Students cop the rough end of the stick - but there is a silver lining for some
Much has been made of the decision by the Fair Work Commission to slash penalty rates for casual and part-time hospitality, fast food, retail and pharmaceutical employees. The significant portion of university students who work in these sectors will now be disadvantaged, many of whom already struggle to fund their education without a full-time job.
The money saved from the penalty rate cuts will instead be converted into profit for big businesses, further extending the gap between the vulnerable and the wealthy. Fortunately, there is a nation-wide movement by some businesses to ensure workers are being fairly remunerated.
